A layer for Mercier’s chalk cellars
Mercier’s Épernay cellars are 30 m underground and the house describes the cellar temperature as 10–12°C throughout the year. Pack an extra layer for the underground portion even if the Avenue de Champagne is warm. Its visitor route covers a section of an 18 km network by driverless train, not an 18 km walk.
The Mercier train is included in all the house’s listed visit tickets. The Founder takes 45 minutes; the guided Bubble Talk takes 1 hour 30 minutes. The ticket duration gives a more useful basis for planning coats, children’s comfort and the next appointment than the total size of the cellar network.
Shoes for the actual route
The À la Française e-bike day requires participants to be confident cyclists; electric bikes are heavier than conventional bicycles. The operator supplies an electric-assisted bike and helmet, and asks for comfortable clothes and shoes. Its stated minimum height is 155 cm and children under 12 are excluded on the GetYourGuide listing (checked October 2026).
That operator places the wine tasting after the cycling and says no alcohol is consumed during the ride. In unsuitable weather it may replace the bike route with a minivan programme. Gloves or a rain layer therefore belong to a vineyard cycling reservation; they are not evidence that every indoor tasting needs outdoor equipment.

Save the ticket and the precise meeting point
For the Reims e-bike departure, the operator identifies Reims Centre station tourist office at Cour de la Gare. For the Épernay departure it uses the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne. Save the address with the e-ticket so a map search does not lead to the cathedral tourist office in Reims.
A bottle bought after a Mercier tasting is a separate purchase from the visit ticket. Keep its receipt and note the bottle volume for the return to Britain. The current Great Britain wine allowance is 18 litres of still or sparkling wine; our customs guide links both agreeing GOV.UK pages and explains the declaration process.
Access and non-drinkers
Mercier describes its route as accessible to people with reduced mobility and lists a French sign-language tablet option. Teenagers must attend with an adult and children and teenagers are offered an alternative to Champagne. Ask for the particular access format when booking the named experience instead of assuming that an audio route and a guided route use identical arrangements.
Billecart-Salmon’s visit request excludes children under 12 and pets; Mercier’s family policy differs. Neither rule establishes another house’s policy. For a party with a child, a non-drinker or a mobility requirement, record that need in the selected house’s booking form or direct enquiry.

Choose the ticket before choosing the shoes
Taittinger’s cellar route at 9 place Saint-Nicaise goes eighteen metres underground and includes numerous stairs. The house’s Instant Rosé ticket lasts seventy minutes, while Instant Comtes lasts 105 minutes. Choose shoes in which you can use those stairs for the booked route and stay comfortable during the tasting. A longer prestige tasting changes the time spent at the site, but it does not turn the underground route into a level exhibition hall.
At Pommery, the published descent is 116 steps to approximately thirty metres below ground. Its practical page gives a cellar temperature of 10°C and humidity of 98%. Carry your extra layer in a small bag that leaves your hands available on the stairway. Pommery’s contemporary-art displays occupy working chalk galleries; a smart restaurant outfit alone does not describe the physical setting of that particular visit.
Moët & Chandon offers a lift and special entrance for wheelchair users at 18 avenue de Champagne. Save the booking for the named product and request the relevant entrance before travelling. Mercier handles wheelchair train spaces directly, so the train’s presence is not enough information on its own for a party with a particular mobility need. Our Épernay access guide gathers the official contacts and route limitations.
Families, ages and companions
Lanson publishes child price bands of seven to twelve and thirteen to seventeen, with under-sevens free on its standard experiences. Billecart-Salmon’s direct visit request excludes children under twelve and pets. Save the rule for the actual producer alongside the ticket, particularly when a group combines adults and teenagers: Lanson’s age bands are not a regional policy that can be applied to an appointment at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
Ruinart’s standard crayères experience has published child pricing for ages seven to seventeen and free admission for under-sevens. Its adult visit lasts two hours and includes two cuvées chosen by the house. The Ruinart guide gives the current named formats. When reserving for a non-drinker or a child, use that product’s booking options and direct enquiry so the accompanying person appears on the reservation with the drinking adults.
Keep the station name with the ticket
Reims Centre and Champagne-Ardenne TGV are different stations. À la Française’s Reims meeting point is the Reims Centre tourist office at Cour de la Gare; its Épernay departure is the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne. Save the written meeting point and the operator’s voucher on your phone before leaving the hotel, so a search for “tourist office” does not substitute the cathedral office for the station meeting.
Moët & Chandon’s current visitor address is 18 avenue de Champagne, while some older heritage descriptions use number 20. Taittinger’s cellar entrance is 9 place Saint-Nicaise; its Château de la Marquetterie is a different property. Use the address on the named visit, not only a search result for the brand. A saved reservation with its address, time and language is the most useful document to carry between the station and the house.
Bottles: keep the receipt and read the label
A standard Champagne bottle holds 75cl, equivalent to 750ml. The Comité Champagne uses approximately six 12.5cl glasses as an illustration of a bottle’s servings, while a producer’s tasting may use smaller pours. Veuve Clicquot, for example, names four 6cl pours on Only One Quality, the Finest. Carrying a receipt and noting the bottle size makes both purchases and the eventual return allowance easier to count.
GOV.UK’s Great Britain allowance of eighteen litres of still or sparkling wine equals twenty-four standard 750ml bottles for an eligible traveller aged seventeen or over. That allowance belongs to the individual; it is not a shared group allowance to redistribute freely. Read the customs guide before buying a case, especially if your purchases also include spirits or fortified wines in another category.
For a picnic or a bottle at your accommodation
The Comité Champagne recommends serving at 8–10°C and cooling a bottle in an ice-and-water bucket for about thirty minutes. Its serving factsheet says to keep a firm hold of the cork, tilt the bottle at 30–45 degrees away from people, and turn the bottle to release it gently. An airtight stopper is the named tool for resealing; the Comité explicitly says a spoon placed in the neck does not preserve the bubbles.
A tall tulip-shaped glass is the Comité Champagne’s suggested glassware: the wider middle allows the bubbles to develop and the narrowing top gathers aromas. Keep this separate from cellar packing: Mercier and Taittinger provide glasses for their booked tastings, while a bottle bought to enjoy later needs its own serving arrangements. For a vineyard day, also follow the e-bike operator’s helmet and confident-cycling requirements, and keep the riding portion sober.
Keep the tasting list with your reservation
Lanson’s standard experiences are offered in French and English in groups of one to eighteen. Le Black Création appears on all four published formats; The Signature adds Le Blanc de Blancs and Le Réserve Extra Brut. Save that actual wine list with the reservation if one cuvée is the reason for booking. The boutique also offers a separate way to buy bottles, so a purchase need not be carried through another house’s underground visit later that day.
