For 2026, the overlap is 11–13 December:Reims Christmas market plus Épernay’s Habits de Lumière. The main overnight base is Reims. The Saturday Épernay outing depends on an actual December return service or a booked driver, not an October last-train time.

Suggested reservation slots

The times below are suggested reservation slots for Mumm and the Habits de Lumière houses. The operator’s calendar supplies the actual departure; the paid ticket is tied to that departure. Numbered map points follow the Champagne stops. Allow extra time for stops between the numbered map points.

Friday 15:00 — Reims station

Cour de la Gare, Reims. Arrive in Reims for the weekend of 11–13 December 2026. Reims Christmas market runs 25 November–27 December 2026; Habits de Lumière in Épernay runs 11–13 December. These are the published 2026 dates; later editions need separate dates.

Saturday 10:30 — G.H. Mumm

34 rue du Champ de Mars, Reims. Reserve Cordon Rouge Experience at €30 for 90 minutes with a Cordon Rouge tasting. Buy the December slot in Mumm’s calendar before choosing the inter-town train. The house’s northern Reims address suits a separate morning visit from the market district.

Saturday afternoon transfer — Épernay station

Place de la Gare, Épernay. Search SNCF for Reims–Épernay on 12 December 2026 and book the return too. An October example takes 34 minutes, with a 20 minute direct service also listed; neither is a verified December late-night train. This plan requires a return that appears in the live 12 December search or an agreed driver.

Sunday 10:00 — Notre-Dame Cathedral

Place du Cardinal-Luçon, Reims. Use the Sunday morning for the cathedral outside worship services, then collect luggage for the booked return. The Palais du Tau remains closed for renovation. The Art Deco Café du Palais is closed Sunday, so it is not listed as this morning’s breakfast stop.

Verified purchases and the unpriced parts

The known paid visit in this plan is Mumm Cordon Rouge Experience from €30. Reims market purchases, Habits food and house bars are pay-as-you-buy. December rail fares, hotel rates and any late driver quote are not verified, so a complete winter-weekend total is not stated. Prices checked October 2026; availability and selected options determine the booking total.

Accommodation for the named base

Search accommodation in Reims through Find stays in Reims ↗. The accommodation directory lists named properties by town; Booking.com supplies the current room terms and dates.

Book the route in this order

Book the Reims room for 11–13 December 2026 and the Mumm Saturday departure. Search the 12 December Reims–Épernay return before fixing the Habits evening. House bars and dinners use their own reservations; the public Avenue festivities do not include a Moët dinner or a cellar tour.the house directory to open the actual producer calendar. For this 6-stop route, reserve the paid appointments first, then the named restaurant, transport and accommodation. No 9:00 or 10:30 slot above becomes a ticket until the operator accepts it.

Access on this route

Taittinger’s official booking pages describe numerous stairs in the underground route at 9 place Saint-Nicaise. The quoted cellar temperature is about 12°C. A city-centre pavement route and the underground visit have different access conditions; send the exact assistance request to Taittinger before buying the named experience.

The two event sites are different kinds of evening

Reims’s Christmas market uses the Hautes Promenades Jean-Louis Schneiter and the esplanade de la Porte de Mars. Porte de Mars is the Roman arch on place de la République; the city’s visitor account gives its length as 32.4 metres. This places the market on the northern side of the centre, near the station and Boulingrin. The cathedral is a separate stop farther into the city, so a cathedral-forecourt hotel description does not identify the market entrance.

Habits de Lumière runs on Épernay’s Avenue de Champagne on 11–13 December 2026. Friday and Saturday provide the illuminated evening festivities; Sunday includes the vintage-vehicle parade. The city says the detailed programme is due in mid-November. The public Avenue celebrations and the houses’ paid bars, tastings or meals are separate offers. Moët currently lists its own Habits dinner at €520 for four hours fifteen minutes; that is a particular house dinner, not a street-entry ticket.

A Saturday cellar with a published wine list

Mumm’s Cordon Rouge Experience is the 90-minute, €30 entry product at 34 rue du Champ de Mars. The €42 Pinot Noir Celebration option also lasts 90 minutes and pours Cordon Rouge with Mumm Rosé. The €60 Vintage Grand Cru option compares RSRV Blanc de Blancs and RSRV Blanc de Noirs. Mumm advertises English, French, Italian and Spanish; book the departure whose language matches the party. A December ticket availability search supplies the actual Saturday start time.

For an Épernay cellar instead of Mumm, Mercier’s official 2026 calendar lists Wednesday–Sunday openings from 18 November to 27 December, with specified exceptions handled in its calendar. Its Founder’s Tour is €25 for 45 minutes with Blanc de Noirs, using the lift and driverless train. The winter season listing supports a December search but does not reserve a 12 December departure. Make this an alternative to the Reims cellar, because the Saturday transfer and evening festival already occupy the rest of the day.

December meals: named tables and actual closures

On Friday or Saturday in Reims, Café du Palais is at 14 place Myron Herrick, with Jacques Simon’s Art Deco glass ceiling. The restaurant’s week runs Tuesday–Saturday, with the later dinner opening on Saturday. Brasserie du Boulingrin at 31 rue de Mars publishes the €27 (checked October 2026) starter–main–dessert formula with a drink and coffee. L’Edito, L’Apostrophe and Brasserie Excelsior are the three named tourist-office listings on place Drouet-d’Erlon, at 78–80, 59 and 96 respectively.

La Grillade Gourmande in Épernay is at 16 rue de Reims, with €42 and €69 menus. Its own site lists a closure from 24 December 2026 to 4 January 2027; that does not overlap the 11–13 December Habits weekend. The regular Sunday and Monday closure still matters for a Sunday meal. The restaurant takes table requests through its form or +33 3 26 55 44 22, and the request needs the restaurant’s reply.

Choose the overnight side of the rail transfer

Continental Hotel at 93 place Drouet-d’Erlon and Hôtel de la Paix at 9 rue Buirette are central Reims choices in the property directory. The Boulingrin-area Hôtel Azur is another Reims base for the market quarter. For an Épernay overnight after Habits, Le 25bis and A. Bergère are on the Avenue itself at 25bis and 38–40. A change from Reims to an Épernay hotel changes the Saturday return requirement; it does not create a late TER departure.

Sunday’s cathedral stop brings the 1991 Reims World Heritage site into this festive weekend. The three Chagall windows date to 1974; the Smiling Angel is on the western façade’s north portal. The Palais du Tau remains closed for renovation in October 2026 and is an exterior stop only in this programme. The separate 249-step cathedral tower route requires an operator departure and is not inserted into the Sunday morning before the booked train home.

The winter clothing detail comes from the booked venues

Mumm’s northern-city reception at 34 rue du Champ de Mars and the outdoor Hautes Promenades market are separate parts of the Friday–Saturday route. Taittinger’s published cellar temperature, for the alternative Saint-Nicaise visit, is approximately 12°C; Pommery advertises about 10°C underground. Those figures explain the layer needed for an indoor cellar even on a mild afternoon. The outdoor December event has no guaranteed temperature in the programme, so the climate guide uses historical Reims averages rather than a forecast for 12 December.

Reims–Courcy’s Météo-France 1981–2010 December normal is 3.7°C, with 57.4 mm precipitation for the month. These are the station’s historical means, not a prediction of snow or rain during Habits de Lumière. The annual rainfall normal is 628.2 mm. The January mean is 2.9°C, illustrating why a winter-season comparison should use the month and reference period explicitly. The when-to-go page gives the full monthly table and the primary station sheet.

Before you go

  • Save your booking confirmation and check its meeting point.
  • Carry the ID and travel documents required for your journey.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for town pavements and cellar floors.
  • Bring a layer for cooler underground spaces.
  • Arrange transport before tasting; never drink and drive.

What a Brit travelling here needs to know

  • Rail and flights: Eurostar links London St Pancras with Paris Gare du Nord; Reims and Épernay trains leave Paris Gare de l’Est. For a flight arrival, compare Paris Charles de Gaulle with your onward SNCF station and date in the transport guide.
  • Documents: for a British-citizen passport, GOV.UK specifies an issue date less than 10 years before arrival and expiry at least 3 months after leaving Schengen. Visa-free tourist visits are limited to 90 days in any 180. Read the current official entry requirements.
  • Money, language and clocks: France uses euros (€) and French; Champagne is 1 hour ahead of the UK. Select English explicitly on a house’s reservation page.
  • Local travel: Reims Centre and Champagne-Ardenne TGV are different stations. Épernay’s station serves the Avenue de Champagne; Hautvillers needs a road transfer. Use the car-free guide for named rail, taxi and tour options.

Entry details checked 23 October 2026. The official GOV.UK page covers other passport types and border procedures.
