Before you go

A cycling or walking day can give Champagne a different pace from a sequence of cellar appointments. Choose the route first, then decide where a visit or meal fits. A canal-side greenway, a climb through a village and a forest discovery trail involve different surfaces and demands.

This guide separates signposted routes, guided e-bike programmes and independent hire. The distance of a named route is not a suggested daily target, and a published tour price does not include an independent rental elsewhere. Use the Épernay hub and Montagne de Reims guide to connect the activity with a suitable base.

The Véloroute de la Marne

The Véloroute de la Marne, V52, runs 145 km, begins at Dormans and passes through Épernay. Its western section is the car-free Marne Valley Greenway. That description applies to the stated section: it does not mean that every kilometre of the complete route, every access road or every diversion is free of traffic.

For an independent outing, choose a shorter segment and identify the start, turnaround and return before collecting a bike. Read the route provider’s current map alongside the day’s signs. A distance measured along the river route will differ from a road journey between the same towns.

Decide whether you will return the bike to its collection point or have a separately agreed one-way arrangement. A railway on the map does not establish that your chosen service can carry a bicycle or that the station has a suitable step-free route. Read the rail operator’s cycle rules for the exact train and bike type before making that part of the plan.

Keep village visits separate from the through route on your map. The detour to a producer, restaurant or accommodation may add climbing, road riding and time. If the main purpose is a cellar appointment, reserve it first and allow a margin for locking the bike and finding the booked entrance.

E-bike tours and hire

À la Française publishes an e-bike Champagne day with lunch from €175 (about £149), with a seven-hour programme (checked October 2026). Read the current listing for the departure town, included visits, lunch and participation conditions. A guided group day is a defined product, while an independent hire booking leaves the route, stops and timetable to you.

Compare the departure-specific options on the tours page. A Reims departure and an Épernay departure are not interchangeable simply because they visit the same region. For a group, establish the meeting point and the operator’s age, height, cycling-confidence and weather terms before collecting payment.

In Reims, Zébullo is an electric bike-share network. The operator’s €5 (about £4)-per-bike package includes two hours, then charges €1.50 (about £1) per additional 30 minutes; rental duration is limited to 24 hours and a bank-card preauthorisation is required (checked October 2026). This is not unlimited day hire or a promise that a city bike can be returned in a vineyard village. Use the operator’s current station and service-zone information.

Manu Loca Vélo is listed by Reims tourism at 4 rue Gaston Boyer, with day hire. Ask the shop for the current bike options and prices; a reliable numerical rate was not verified here. Establish collection and return times, what is supplied with the bike and what happens if the route takes longer than planned.

In Épernay, My Vintage Tour Company offers unguided e-bike hire at 2 passage Fourché, with half-day, full-day and longer formats. Épernay tourism also lists Épernay Bike Hire at 5 rue de la Fauvette. Published starting figures retrieved for those listings did not identify a sufficiently clear hire duration, so no daily price is inferred. Request the quote for the exact period and equipment you need.

Before leaving, have the provider demonstrate the assist settings, brakes, lock and return procedure. Agree what to do about a puncture or depleted battery and keep the support number available offline. A rental confirmation should identify the bike and period, not just the amount paid.

For an organised ride, ask where the cycling portion begins and ends and how any transfers work. Keep the operator’s stated duration separate from the amount of time you expect to spend on the bike. Lunch, tastings and transport can all be part of that programme, so its seven-hour length is not a seven-hour independent cycling target.

Vineyard walks

Use Hautvillers for a village-and-landscape day, with its streets, abbey setting and surrounding slopes. Follow published public walking routes and signs; rows of vines and farm tracks remain working land. A view across a vineyard does not imply permission to enter it.

In the Montagne de Reims, compare the forest option with a village route before committing to a long circuit. Choose a distance that suits the whole party, including the return to transport. The region’s geography can turn a short-looking map detour into a different walk from the one originally selected.

Carry the route map offline and make the endpoint explicit. If a path is closed or a field operation blocks access, follow the posted alternative or turn back rather than crossing the working area. Leave gates and barriers as directed and take litter away. These are practical ways to keep a visitor outing compatible with the place’s everyday use.

For a mixed group, choose a shared meeting point and a clear time for the next activity. Someone who prefers a short village stroll need not join a longer vineyard loop. The children and non-drinkers guide helps combine an outdoor stop with a museum or family visit.

The Faux de Verzy trail

The Office national des forêts describes La balade des Faux as a three-kilometre discovery trail, with about one hour and 30 minutes of contemplative walking excluding detours. It passes through the biological reserve in Verzy national forest, among the distinctive twisted beech trees.

The ONF description calls the trail stony and without major climbing. Those words do not establish wheelchair or pushchair suitability for every visitor or season. Use the official route information and ask about your particular access needs before making it the centre of a family day.

Stay on the marked trail to protect the rare trees and reserve. Treat the published duration as an indication for the described walk, then allow separately for breaks, transport and any additional stop. Keep photographs to places accessible from the route and respect barriers around sensitive areas.

The forest trail is a distinct outing from a vineyard bike tour. If you combine the two, calculate the transfer and the second activity independently. The area guide gives context for Verzy and neighbouring villages without implying they are all within a short walk of one another.

Safety and tasting

Make the transport decision before the tasting bookings. The person cycling or driving should avoid alcohol. A tour that includes tastings still needs a safe participation plan; discuss non-drinking options with the operator and use transport appropriate to the whole day.

Ask the hire provider about helmets and visibility equipment, use lights when conditions require them and follow French road rules. A bike’s electric assistance changes how it feels but does not remove the need to steer, brake and deal with traffic. Practise starting and stopping away from traffic before joining the route.

Carry water, a charged phone and clothing suited to the forecast. Keep the return journey in the plan if the weather changes. For any cellar appointment, allow time to secure the bike and arrive as instructed; avoid scheduling the last rental-return minute as the finish of a distant tasting.

When a route crosses a road or passes a working vineyard entrance, slow down and read the situation. Do not stop in the carriageway to take a photograph. A picturesque section can still be part of another person’s commute or workplace.

Where to stay

Choose the base around the ride you actually intend to do. An Épernay room can suit an Avenue visit and a hire collection in town; a village room needs a separate plan for meals, luggage and the return after the activity. Ask the property about secure cycle storage and charging before assuming either is included.

Find hotels in Épernay. For village accommodation, use the Hautvillers shortlist or the Montagne de Reims shortlist, then compare the property’s actual location with the selected route. The grower itinerary helps organise appointments around one base.

FAQ

Is the whole V52 traffic-free?

No such claim is made here. The western Marne Valley Greenway section is described as car-free; access roads, other sections and diversions need their own route information.

How long is the Faux de Verzy discovery walk?

ONF gives three kilometres and about one hour and 30 minutes of contemplative walking, excluding detours. Stay on the marked trail.

Is Zébullo unlimited daily hire?

No. The stated package includes two hours, then charges for additional 30-minute periods. Use the operator’s current zone, station and return rules.

Can I ride through any vineyard?

Use published public routes and observe signs and barriers. Vineyard rows and farm tracks are working land and do not automatically provide public access.

Should I book a tour or hire independently?

Compare the guided programme’s departure, inclusions and participation rules with the independent route and rental period you can manage. Both need a safe, non-drinking cycling plan.
